One of my definite highlights of this year so far was the legendary Champagne Event “Krug Encounters” – an immersive brand experience hosted by the House of Krug to share the exceptional brand spirit of Krug with a selected group of international Champagne lovers.

It all started with a surprisingly generous invitation. It came along with a beautiful wooden case that contained four different editions of Krug Grand Cuvées and Vintages. Just to hold these exquisite specimens in my hands already felt quite special. I immediately noticed the unique silhouette of the classy and refined bottles. The neck of the bottle has such a graceful and slender contour that it not only creates a pleasant contrast to the voluminous body, it also gives the whole bottle the look and feel of an upside down
Champagne glass. Apart from the wooden box, I also received a large and beautifully crafted, deep-red bag that held six Joseph Champagne glasses which were specially designed in cooperation with Riedel for the perfect Krug experience. Precious, yet understated, this welcome kit made me extremely curious, and I could not wait to dive deeper into the world of this fascinating brand!

Maison Krug has a very original approach to Champagne making. A highly respected house, established in Reims in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy – to craft annually the best Champagne he could offer, regardless of climate variations. So, every year, a new unique edition of Krug Grande Cuvée is created. “In the House of Krug there is no hierarchy”, says sixth generation director Olivier Krug, and refers to the multi-vintage Grande Cuvée which is produced with the same care and on the same quality level as a Vintage Krug. Krug is about the ultimate expression of pleasure every single year.
During the “Krug Encounters”, Director Olivier Krug and Cellar Master Julie Cavil welcomed us heartily and provided backstage access to Krug’s extraordinary craftsmanship. The process of creating a Krug Grande Cuvée is simply stellar. Every year, Julie Cavil and her team choose from a library of around 400 base wines. In the end, a Krug Grande Cuvée is a blend of over 120 different wines from more than 10 different years. The Champagne rests for about seven years in Krug’s cellars before it is ready to be savored with its fullness of aromas and flavors. To me, it tasted like the “Nectar of the Gods”!

One can find Krug’s attention to quality in every single detail. Each edition of Krug features a unique blend with a remarkable story to tell. The packaging acts like a host that invites Krug enthusiasts to discover more about the world beyond the bottle through the Krug iD – a six-digit code printed on the back label of every bottle. Scanned by the Krug app or entered in the website, the Krug iD reveals a multi-sensorial set of features, including the Cellar Master’s impressions of the year, recommendations for ideal storage and serving, suggestions for food pairing and even inspirations for music pairing as supporting elements to create the ultimate Krug experience.

Due to the highest quality standards during the whole process of creation, it is no surprise that Krug also belongs to the world’s most expensive Champagnes. However, Krug is not only reserved for the elites or for Champagne connoisseurs. Effortlessly chic, Krug gives one the feeling that it is all about generosity. A brand composed by superlative products, yet elegant and discreet, reflecting the family’s love of wine making and passion to share it. A Champagne for the purest pleasure.
Santé!
